Background

Wellness is a term that is associated with vitality, fitness, and well-being. It signifies a disease-free state of good health. The term appeals to those companies interested in promoting sales through consumer identification with a healthy lifestyle. One of the important factors towards healthy lifestyle is food. Food will continue to grow in importance as a result of increased consumerʼs understanding of wellness and its relationship with health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, chronic heart disease, and other related health conditions.

Malaysians are becoming more health and body conscious, thus having healthy balanced diet and taking foods with functional properties are becoming important. In terms of new product launches, there is a strong emphasis on wellness products for digestive health, weight control, beauty enhancement, brain function, bone strength and mood improvement.

For companies to remain competitive, innovative products with wellness benefits must be formulated and produced. Some food companies now market itself as a ʻwellnessʼ company rather than a food manufacturer, with a clear strategy for future growth and development, in line with the change in consumerʼs trend towards healthier living. Many new technological innovations are created to deliver wellness foods to the consumers with health benefits that are scientifically proven. The words ʻspeed and innovationʼ have become the watchwords for food industries seeking to become ʻfirst to marketʼ with successful functional food for wellness products.

Hence, the National Food Technology Seminar (NFTS) 2012 will address and highlight current trends and development in functional foods for wellness as well as new research findings. It will also provide networking opportunities among researchers, industry and regulators.
